Metallurgical and materials engineers create new materials or improve existing materials that meet certain mechanical, chemical, electrical, and thermal requirements. This is accomplished through the design, processing, and analysis of materials. Materials engineers understand the relationship between the properties of a material and its internal structure—from the macro level to the atomic level.
